The name Brisbane is named to honour Sir Thomas Brisbane (1773–1860) who was Governor of New South Wales from 1821 to 1825. [1] [2] When it was given its name and declared as a town in 1834, to replace its penal colony status, [3] Brisbane was still part of the Colony of New South Wales.

Backhouse's original design was changed and downsized numerous times over the course of the cathedral's completion, mainly for economic reasons. In 1927, there was a plan to replace St Stephen's with a new Holy Name Cathedral to be built in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. However, funding was only sufficient to build the crypt.
