Nelson was delighted at Horatia's birth (the more so when his second child with Emma, another girl, died a few weeks after her birth in early 1803), and he spent as often as he could during his brief times onshore from 1803 to 1805 enjoying domestic life with her and Emma at Merton Place, more frequently and easily once Sir William was dead.
Portrait of Horatio Nelson is an 1801 full-length portrait of the British admiral Horatio Nelson by the English artist William Beechey. [1] It depicts Nelson in the full dress uniform of rear admiral. It was commissioned by the Corporation of the City of Norwich, the capital of Nelson's native county Norfolk. It cost £210. [2]

Horatio Walpole was a nephew of Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford, (second creation) the de facto first prime minister of Great Britain. [3] Nelson retained a strong Christian faith throughout his life. [4] Nelson's uncle Maurice Suckling was a high-ranking naval officer, and is believed to have had a major impact on Nelson's life. [5]
The government had made William an Earl and his son Horatio (also known as Horace) a Viscount – the titles Nelson had aspired to – and now he was also Duke of Bronte. Emma received £2000, Merton, and £500 per annum from the Bronte estate – much less than she had when Nelson was alive, and not enough to maintain Merton. [ 4 ]
