The Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Portal (Latin: Arcis Portal) is a diocese located in the city of Fort Portal in the ecclesiastical province of Mbarara in Uganda. [1]The Catholic Diocese of Fort Portal formerly belonging to Rwenzori Vicariate was erected on 2 July 1961, with Vincent Joseph McCauley† CSC, as its first bishop.
He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Portal, on 2 January 1999. Serapio Bwemi Magambo (8 May 1928–8 February 1995), was a Ugandan Catholic priest who served as the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Portal, from 16 November 1972 until his resignation on 17 June 1991. Prior to that, he served as the Auxiliary Bishop of Fort Portal from 26 June 1969 until 16 November 1972. [1]

On 17 June 1991, Kalanda was appointed Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Portal, serving in that capacity until he retired on 18 March 2003. He died on 19 August 2015, as Bishop Emeritus of Fort Portal, Uganda, at the age of 88 years and 5 months.
Vincent Joseph McCauley, CSC (March 8, 1906 – November 1, 1982) was an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church.A member of the Congregation of Holy Cross, he was the first Bishop of Fort Portal, having served as the ordinary of the diocese from 1961 to 1972.
The archdiocese dates back to the Vicariate Apostolic of Ruwenzori, which was erected on May 28, 1934 by splitting the Vicariate Apostolic of Uganda. On March 25, 1953 it was elevated to a diocese and renamed after its principal town Mbarara. 1961 territory was lost to the newly erected diocese of Fort Portal, and again in 1966 to the diocese of Kabale.
