The poem's exact authorship, origin, and style of writing are still controversial. According to K.W. Taylor, the account of the poem comes from the 14th-century Buddhist scripture Thiền uyển tập anh and if the story of the poem is true, then the poem could not have been sung in the form it currently exists today.
Nguyễn Chí Thiện (27 February 1939 – 2 October 2012) was a North Vietnamese dissident, activist and poet who spent a total of twenty-seven years as a political prisoner of the communist regimes of both North Vietnam and of post-1975 Vietnam, [1] before being released and allowed to join the large Overseas Vietnamese community in the United States.
She was the daughter of Lưu Tiến Ích and Phùng Thị Tôn. In 1929, at age 13, her poem got published in Nam Phong. She was one of the writers associated with the Nhân Văn-Giai Phẩm movement. [1] Along with Nguyễn Hữu Đang she was one of the five most active participants in the movement and was imprisoned from 1958-1974. [2]
