As noted in comments, the "explorer's pack" is a "pack" of goods, that is, a list of items sold together, not necessarily a "backpack and contents." The waterskin would normally be carried external to the backpack, and the bedroll would be tied to the outside. Carry the mess kit and tinderbox in a belt pouch, and the backpack is just exactly full.

10 torches 10 (10 x 1) a Tinderbox - 1. 10 days of Rations - 20 (2 x 10) a Waterskin - 5. 50 feet of Hempen rope - 10 Total: 56.5 minus backpack: 51.5 minus rope: 41.5. If we strap the waterskin to our belt and the torches to the outside, that lowers us to 26.5. Both of these packs come overloaded, unless I'm miscalculating something.

The Handy Haversack is still around in the 5e SRD: This backpack has a central pouch and two side pouches, each of which is an extradimensional space. Each side pouch can hold up to 20 pounds of material, not exceeding a volume of 2 cubic feet. The large central pouch can hold up to 8 cubic feet or 80 pounds of material.

  6. An ally is not clearly defined in 5e, so we can use the English definition: a person, group, or nation that is associated with another or others for some common cause or purpose Ally in the case of D&D 5e is almost certainly meant to include animals since wolves get the Pack Tactics trait too so we just have to assume the mount has "a common ...

Pack Tactics. The sea lion has advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of the sea lion's allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated. To contrast, here is the sahuagin's blood frenzy special trait:

In the PHB, a book has a listed description and value (25pg), and in the scholars's pack a book of lore is listed while those with the cloistered scholar background (SCAG) start with a book on a subject of your current study. Nowhere is it listed what exactly these books are intended to provide players.

  9. Kobolds from Volo's Guide to Monsters have Pack Tactics (pg. 119), which means they get to make melee attack rolls with advantage if an ally is within 5' of their target. Unfortunately, since the familiar is delivering the spell attack, you are not actually the one attacking, since "your familiar can deliver the spell as if it had cast the ...

  10. Note that this isn't a "free action" - there's no such thing as a free action in D&D 5e. Incite Rampage is one of the Gnoll Lord's actions, just like Bite, Glaive, Longbow, or Multiattack. The reason it can be performed along with the 2 attacks is because a Multiattack is a single action that allows a monster to do everything it lists.

  11. On page 119 of VGtM, the description of the Kobold playable race's trait, Pack Tactics, reads: Pack Tactics. You have advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of your allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated.
