The most constant entity during its existence was the Granville School, in operation from 1846 to 1958. The death knell for the village came in 1881 in the form of a railroad built through Taintor, Iowa, a town one and a half miles to the northeast in neighboring Prairie Township. Granville was known for its successful baseball program, as the Spartans have won state championships in 1971, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1989, 2000 and 2001. They have also qualified for the state tournament multiple times since that last championship.
