The parish was founded in 1856 as St. Margaret's and the name was changed to Sacred Heart when the present cathedral was built. Both the cathedral and the rectory are on the National Register. St. Anthony's Church: 1850-1853 built 1984 NRHP-listed 407 and 417 Main St.
When it was dedicated in 1889, the cathedral was the largest church of any denomination west of the Mississippi River. [6] Manogue died in 1895. Leo XIII in 1896 named Thomas Grace of Sacramento as his replacement as bishop. [7] [3] Grace dedicated St. Patrick Church in Scotia and St. Joseph Church in Redding in 1905. [8]

The Saint, according to his will, had been buried in the small church of Santa Maria Mater Domini, probably dating from the late 12th century and near which a convent was founded by him in 1229. This church was incorporated into the present basilica as the Cappella della Madonna Mora (Chapel of the Dark Madonna).

He was appointed as the sixth bishop of the Diocese of Stockton in California by Pope Francis on January 23, 2018.
