A blackboard or a chalkboard is a reusable writing surface on which text or drawings are made with sticks of calcium sulphate or calcium carbonate, known, when used for this purpose, as chalk. Blackboards were originally made of smooth, thin sheets of black or dark grey slate stone.
That's a regular kitchen sponge. If sponges are ever used for chalkboard erasers it is so rare as to be invisible in all popular media from the time period in which chalkboards were common. Most of my public school attendence was during chalkboard usage and I didn't see anyone use a sponge to erase a chalk board even once.
