Deming (/ ˈ d ɛ m ɪ ŋ /, DEM-ing) is a city in Luna County, New Mexico, United States, 60 miles (97 km) west of Las Cruces and 35 miles (56 km) north of the Mexican border. The population was 14,758 as of the 2020 census . [ 4 ]
The Luna County Courthouse in Deming, New Mexico was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. The listing included a 6.1 acres (2.5 ha) area, with one contributing building, the 1910-built courthouse.
Luna County was formed from parts of Grant County and Doña Ana County by the New Mexico Legislature on March 16, 1901. It was named for Solomon Luna, a politician who advocated for independence of the county, following a strong rivalry between the cities of Deming and Silver City, both of which were at the time in Grant County.
The Downtown Deming Historic District, in Deming, New Mexico, is a 30 acres (12 ha) historic district which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. [1] It is unusual in its Queen Anne style because it has a two-story hexagonal cupola and a hexagonal porch and cupola. All eaves have Victorian gingerbread trim. [2] [3]
