Glens Falls is a city in the southeastern corner of Warren County, surrounded by the town of Queensbury to the north, east, and west, and by the Hudson River and Saratoga County to the south. Glens Falls is known as "Hometown U.S.A.", a title Look magazine gave it in 1944. The city has also referred to itself as the "Empire City."
In 1908, the then largest village within Queensbury, Glens Falls, incorporated as a city and became a separate municipality. [14] [15] The population of Queensbury has exceeded that of Glens Falls since the 1980 Census. [16] In 2003, with permission from Queensbury, [17] Glens Falls annexed approximately 49 acres (0.20 km 2) of the town.
Because of devastating fires in 1862 and 1902, the majority of the buildings were built between 1902 and 1930. Notable buildings include the Italianate style Cowles block (1865), Neoclassical style Rogers Building (1926-1927), Beaux-Arts style Empire Theater (1899), and Neoclassical style Glens Falls City Hall (1900). Warren Street in Glens Falls, Lower Warren Street in Queensbury, and River Street in Hudson Falls were originally designated as part of NY 30 in 1924. [ 9 ] [ 10 ] In late 1926, the U.S. Highway System was created.
What is now WMML began operations in 1959 as WSET, programming a middle of the road format; for a time, the station studios were located in the Queensbury Hotel in Glens Falls. In 1965, WSET changed its call sign to WBZA; the new call sign arose from the station owner's respect for WBZ in Boston.
