After the Dominican Republic was established in 1844, an attempt to reopen the university was made by President Pedro Santana in 1859, but this was unsuccessful. [ 1 ] In 1866 the Instituto Profesional (Professional Institute) was created by Jose Gabriel Garcia and Emiliano Tejera in Santo Domingo, providing higher education in the city.
Through the years, UNIBE expanded its offerings in other areas. It currently has psychology, education, hospitality management, industrial engineering, and over 30 graduate programs. It has an enrollment of more than 3,000 students and 15,000 alumni. UNIBE has been the best ranked university in the Dominican Republic since 2018.

Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (English: Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra) or PUCMM is a private, coeducational Roman Catholic university in the Dominican Republic. The university grants undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and professional degrees.
Also donated by the Dominican Government was a large parcel of land near the former Geriatric Hospital. These sites evolved into Campus I and Campus II. As Academic programs were added, the student body enrollment increased. In the 2000s Campus I was demolished and it was sold to different companies, while Campus II became the entire university.
