The Municipality was created by Law N° 18653 of 15 March 2020, in compliance with the provisions of the Law N° 18567 that provided for the creation of municipalities over all settlements with 2000 or more inhabitants.
From 1872 to 1873 Gomensoro served as President of Uruguay (interim). While his term office was intended to be temporary in nature, it actually lasted almost one year. In February 1873 he was succeeded as President by José Eugenio Ellauri.
