Hero of Israel (Hebrew: גיבור ישראל) is an Israeli military decoration that was awarded during the War of Independence. [1] When the IDF was first established in May 1948, a system of decorations had not yet been instituted, but many soldiers who had distinguished themselves in battle were recommended by their officers for awards.
In July 1949 he was awarded the Hero of Israel citation, [2] and in April 1973 he received the Medal of Valor automatically. [ 5 ] Following the Yom Kippur War of 1973, Avigdorov visited bereaved families, as well as wounded veterans, to show them that one could live with an injury.
For this he was awarded the Hero of Israel commendation, which is the highest commendation ever awarded by the IDF, given to only twelve soldiers: On January 4, 1949, in the battle for the cemetery in Rafah, our artillery car was stopped in the field and the entire sector was concealed in front of our cannon position.
