The San Nicholas Church is one of the oldest stone churches of Bohol, built in the later half of the 19th century. It is identified by its twin bell towers either side of the church's front façade, and it is dedicated to San Nicolas Tolentino, who is also the town's patron saint and whose feast day is celebrated 10 September. [ 20 ]
Sagbayan was formerly part of the surrounding municipalities of Clarin, Inabanga, Carmen, and Balilihan.It was created into a separate town through Executive Order No. 204 of President Elpidio Quirino on February 9, 1949, and named Borja, [10] in honor of Salustiano Borja, the first elected civil governor of the Province of Bohol.
