Historically, the county, like all of Western Oregon north of the Rogue Valley, also leaned strongly Republican: before 1964 the only other Democrats to carry Douglas County had been John F. Kennedy in 1960, Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1936 and 1932, Woodrow Wilson in 1912 and William Jennings Bryan in 1896.

Lookingglass is located in west-central Douglas County in the valley of Lookingglass Creek, a tributary of the South Umpqua River. The community is 9 miles (14 km) southwest of Roseburg, the county seat, via Lookingglass Road. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Lookingglass CDP has an area of 11.6 square miles (30.0 km 2), all of it land. [4]
