Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) was created in 1958 through WAPDA Act, 1958. Prior to this, the electricity supply service in Pakistan was undertaken by different agencies, both in public and private sectors, in different areas. The local areas electricity distribution service was being performed by various Regions of WAPDA.
WAPDA Engineer Fateh Ullah discovered the dam site in 1957 by looking at the GTS maps later on he prepared a pre-feasibility report in April 1962. President Muhammad Ayub Khan requested the World Bank to send its experts to identify dam sites in Pakistan and other water resources projects.
WAPDA will also inject its equity equivalent to 15% of the project base cost. On 1 April 2020, the World Bank approved an additional US$700 million in financing, with the funds to be used for the 765 kV transmission line that will complete the first 2,160 MW phase of the project on the Indus River.
