Sharafuddin was born on 24 December 1945, at the Istana Jema'ah in Klang, as the first son of the Raja Muda (Crown Prince) of Selangor, Tengku Abdul Aziz Shah and his first wife, Raja Saidatul Ihsan binti Tengku Badar Shah (1923–2011).
Her husband, Sharafuddin built a pavilion at their private residence specifically for feeding stray cats. [1] On 24 March 2017, she launched the "Stray Free Selangor (SFS) – The Humane and Compassionate Way" campaign through the Selangor Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (SPCA), of which she is a royal patron.

On 1 July 2016, his elder brother, the incumbent Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Al-Haj, promoted Tengku Sulaiman Shah Al-Haj to Tengku Laksamana of Selangor. He is also a member of The Council of the Royal Court of Selangor (Dewan Diraja Selangor). Tengku Sulaiman Shah returned to Malaysia in 1970.
