St Bartholomew the Great is named to distinguish it from its neighbouring smaller church of St Bartholomew the Less, founded at the same time within the precincts of St Bartholomew's Hospital as a chapel of ease. The two parish churches were reunited in 2012 under the benefice of Great St Bartholomew and services take place in both buildings.
The present establishment is the latest in a series of churches and chapels associated with the hospital over the past 800 years. Its earliest predecessor, known as the Chapel of the Holy Cross, was founded nearby in 1123 (at the same time as the priory, now the Priory Church of St Bartholomew the Great) before moving to the present site in 1184.

Rahere (pronounced [ɹaˈhɪə(ɹ)]), or Raher or Raherius, was a 12th-century Anglo-Norman priest and later canon regular.He was a favourite of King Henry I and is most famous for having founded St Bartholomew's Priory and the Hospital of St Bartholomew in 1123.
The chapel was part of the old St Bartholomew hospital in Newbury. A hospital at the site existed in records in the early 13th century. "The commissioners of Henry VIII, in 1546, reported that the origin of the hospital was unknown, but that it was founded to maintain a priest to sing in the hospital, and two poor men to pray there continually."
It was formed in 1995 by the merger of the London Hospital Medical College (the first school to be granted an official charter for medical teaching in 1785) and the Medical College of St Bartholomew's Hospital (established in 1843, with medical teaching dating back to the founding of the hospital in 1123).
