The district formed on May 8, 1883, and began as a single room at the southwest corner of East Avenue and Baseline Road. Its first two-room school, which opened in 1890 on the southeast corner of Victoria and Etiwanda Avenues, grew into a four-room, two-story brick school in 1912.
As the first town planned by the Chaffey brothers, Etiwanda became their test bed. The Etiwanda Water Company, a mutual water company, and pipe system of irrigation designed by George Chaffey became the standard for water system management in southern California. Two other events are a further testament to the Chaffeys' innovation.

Summit Intermediate is one of the four middle schools in the Etiwanda School District and is located in the incorporated community of Rancho Cucamonga. Summit opened as a middle school in 1994. Before it was a middle school, it was an elementary school since 1964. Summit's feeder schools are primarily Etiwanda Colony and D.W Long. [1]
