A tappet or valve lifter is a valve train component which converts rotational motion into linear motion in activating a valve. It is most commonly found in internal combustion engines , where it converts the rotational motion of the camshaft into linear motion of intake and exhaust valves, either directly or indirectly.
When equipped with self-sealing valves, quick connect fittings will, upon disconnection, automatically contain any fluid in the line. However, this depends on the type of coupling, such as single shut-off, double shut-off, or straight-through designs, which determine whether fluid retention occurs.

An emergency disconnect system/sequence (EDS) disconnects the rig from the well in case of an emergency. The EDS is also intended to automatically trigger the deadman switch, which closes the BOP, kill and choke valves. The EDS may be a subsystem of the BOP stack's control pods or separate. Installation may involve shrink-fitting, heating the cylinder head and cooling the valve guide so as to ease insertion, then driving the new guide in quickly with a press or a hammer. Once the parts return to room temperature the new valve guide will be solidly in place and ready to be reamed and honed to proper diameter.
When used properly in conjunction with basic airway maneuvers and adjuncts it allows for adequate ventilation of the patient. The BVM consists of a mask attached to a shutter valve. The valve allows air to flow into the lungs but prevents air from the lungs from filling the bag for the next breath. This prevents rebreathing of air with low oxygen.
