Alto Saxophone Improvisations 1979 is a solo album by American saxophonist and composer Anthony Braxton, recorded in 1978 and 1979 and released on the Arista label. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] The tracks were subsequently reissued on The Complete Arista Recordings of Anthony Braxton on Mosaic Records in 2008.

The genre of solo saxophone has a rich, but largely unmapped history in contemporary music, particularly jazz. [1] Many, but not all, musicians who play and record solo saxophone use extended techniques, a vocabulary of the saxophone beyond its normal range.
The work is remarkable for its use of the alto saxophone as a solo instrument. Rachmaninoff was advised as to its use by the American orchestrator and composer Robert Russell Bennett . [ 7 ] The composition includes several quotations from Rachmaninoff's other works, and can be regarded as a summing-up of his entire career as a composer.
On the alto saxophone he uses a refaced 7* Yanagisawa mouthpiece, as well as a model made specifically for him by the brand Saxz, and a Meyer 5M. [ 38 ] [ 39 ] He used a Selmer Mark VII saxophone for most of his career, but switched to the more renowned Mark VI at some point in the 2010s [ 39 ] and currently uses a Yamaha YAS-875EX.
