Apple River is a village in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, United States. Located on the southern border of Lafayette County, Wisconsin. The population was 347 at the 2020 census, down from 366 in 2010.
The Apple River is a tributary of the Mississippi River, about 55 miles (89 km) long, [2] in southwestern Wisconsin and northwestern Illinois in the United States. It rises in Lafayette County, Wisconsin , and flows for most of its length in Illinois, through Jo Daviess and Carroll Counties.

Millville was located in what is today the Apple River Canyon State Park; its physical address is within the village of Apple River. The canyon is a deep gorge carved by the Apple River when its course was diverted during the Illinoian Stage, 132,000–300,000 years ago. The old river channel eventually filled and became the South Fork Apple River.

Apple River Township is one of 23 townships in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 498 and it contained 257 housing units. [ 2 ] It was formed from Thompson Township on September 13, 1858.
