The silhouette value is a measure of how similar an object is to its own cluster (cohesion) compared to other clusters (separation). The silhouette ranges from −1 to +1, where a high value indicates that the object is well matched to its own cluster and poorly matched to neighboring clusters.
The average silhouette of the data is another useful criterion for assessing the natural number of clusters. The silhouette of a data instance is a measure of how closely it is matched to data within its cluster and how loosely it is matched to data of the neighboring cluster, i.e., the cluster whose average distance from the datum is lowest. Comparison of waist (cyan)-to-height (pink) ratio and body roundness index (the waist circumference is circularised (dashed cyan), and its diameter is used to calculate the eccentricity of the dotted black ellipse)
Increasing the maximum number of clusters can change the location of the perceived "elbow", and in many cases alternate heuristics such as the variance-ratio-criterion or the average silhouette width are considered to be more reliable. [3]
Given a data set of n points: {x 1, ..., x n}, and the assignment of these points to k clusters: {C 1, ..., C k}, the Calinski–Harabasz (CH) Index is defined as the ratio of the between-cluster separation (BCSS) to the within-cluster dispersion (WCSS), normalized by their number of degrees of freedom:
