The farm is located in the 1,150-acre (4.7 km 2) Timber Ridge Forest Preserve in West Chicago, Illinois. Kline Creek Farm is open to the public year-round from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM (Central Time), Thursday through Monday and is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. Admission is free.
The main attraction of the park is the 146-acre (59 ha) Lincoln Trail Lake, which was the third lake created in Illinois (1955-1956) using federal monies under the Dingell-Johnson Act. The lake's maximum depth is 41 feet (12 m). [4] The park offers camping, hiking, fishing and boating (outboard motors are limited to 10 horsepower (7.5 kW)).

The IDNR describes the topography of the parcel as "a former surface mine which consists of spoil ridges interspersed with timber, grasslands, small ponds and a large lake." The first national forest was established as the Yellowstone Park Timber and Land Reserve on March 30, 1891, then in the Department of the Interior. In 1897, the Organic Act provided purposes for which forest reserves could be established, including to reserve a supply of timber, protect the forest from development, and secure water supplies.
