UPMC Mercy is a main hospital facility of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and is located in the Uptown section of the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, adjacent to Duquesne University, and a few blocks from the PPG Paints Arena and downtown Pittsburgh.
UPMC Mercy is a 495-bed teaching and Level 1 trauma hospital located in the Bluff neighborhood adjacent to downtown and less than two miles (3 km) from UPMC Presbyterian in Oakland. Mercy was the first chartered hospital in the city of Pittsburgh and was the first hospital in the world to have been established by the Sisters of Mercy.
In June 2008, UPMC announced it would close and consolidate UPMC South Side with UPMC Mercy, which is less than two miles (3 km) away, and was undergoing $75-$90 million in expansions to its campus. [3] South Side ended its hospital designation on June 30, 2009, when the emergency department closed its doors, transferring patients to UPMC Mercy.
