Atkins High School located at Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina, was dedicated on April 2, 1931, as a facility for African American students. The building, equipment and grounds were valued at that time at $400,000. This was paid primarily by the city, with a grant of $50,000 from the Rosenwald Fund. [2]
Atkins is distinct in that it houses three separate academies: Biotechnology, Computer Technology, and Pre-Engineering. These departments were originally three separate schools under the Atkins Complex, but as of the 2010–11 school year, the schools were integrated into one establishment, for administrative ease.

A member of the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame, Raymond "Rabbit" Burnett (1914–1996) was an Atkins High graduate who went on to coach Little Rock High School to a mythical national championship in 1946 (14-0) and then coached Arkansas Tech to back-to-back AIC football championships in 1948–1949.
Born and raised in rural Atkins, Arkansas, Matthews attended local Atkins High School, where he played varsity football under coach Raymond Burnett and was a two-time All-State selection. Matthews went on to play at Arkansas Tech University , where he was an All- Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference (AIC) honoree in 1940 and 1941.
