On November 30, 2023, Valve released the Steam Link client for Meta Quest, compatible with Meta Quest 2 and newer, which allows streaming content from a PC running SteamVR to the devices over a local Wi-Fi network. Meta Horizon OS has gone through several changes since the release of the Oculus Rift DK1 on March 29, 2013.. The operating system has been updated on a roughly monthly basis since the v1.0 release in 2016, and was gradually ported from a proprietary embedded operating system to Android starting in 2015, first for the Samsung Gear VR and later for its own headsets.
The later introduction of Oculus Link led to reappraisals of the Quest, with critics praising the device's increased flexibility, and indicating that devices like the Quest would likely supplant the PC-only Rift headsets moving forward. A successor, the Oculus Quest 2, was released in 2020.
