Moll's gland, also known as the gland of Moll or ciliary gland, is a modified apocrine sweat gland that is found on the margin of the eyelid. They are next to the base of the eyelashes, and anterior to the meibomian glands within the distal eyelid margin. These glands are relatively large and tubular-shaped.
There are approximately forty Krause glands in the region of the upper eyelid, and around 6 to 8 in the region of the lower lid. [2] The function of these glands are to produce tears which are secreted onto the surface of the conjunctiva. There are rare instances of tumors associated with Krause's glands.
Conjunctival concretions can be seen easily by everting the eyelid. The projecting concretions can be removed if they are causing concerning symptoms. Removal can be performed by an eye doctor. Sometimes just a needle or a scalpel is used to remove the concretion under local light anesthesia of the conjunctiva in adults.
