Othello (/ oʊ ˈ θ ɛ l oʊ /) is a city in Adams County, Washington, United States. The population was 8,549 at the 2020 census , [ 4 ] a 16 percent increase from 2010. It is located in the heart of the Columbia Basin Project , approximately 100 miles (160 km) southwest of Spokane .
Adams County's two most populous cities are Ritzville and Othello. Ritzville is located in the northeastern corner of the county at the junction of I-90 and US 395, making it a popular stop for travelers. Ritzville is an hour's drive from Spokane. Othello is located in the southwestern panhandle of the county.
Drumheller Channels connects the Quincy Basin, which lies to north, with the Othello Basin on the south. It can be reached most easily from Othello, Washington approximately 8 km (5.0 mi) northwest on McManamon Road, then north on Morgan Lake Road which passes through the Drumheller Channels region.
The Othello–Washtucna highway and a series of connecting farm-to-market roads were built from 1957 to 1965 by the state highway department, bypassing existing county roads. [ 32 ] [ 33 ] [ 34 ] The Vantage–Othello highway was completed concurrently in the early 1950s.
The ridge, reaching to 2,700 feet, terminates in the east south of Othello, Washington near the foot of the Drumheller Channels. It continues to the west where it is broken at Sentinel Gap (a water gap through which the Columbia River passes) before ending in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains .
