Independent living remains difficult for many people and institutionalisation is offered as an ongoing practical solution to meeting care needs. Noticeable in the ideological push for independent living is the marketisation of institutional care as independent living in 21st century Canada. [15]
A small group of students approached the Association of MIT Alumnae (AMITA) about the possibility of an all-women's living group. At the time, while there were places for women to live on and off campus, including McCormick , a female-only dorm, and several co-ed fraternities and dorms, there was no cooperative living group for females.
Various forms of long-term residential care are available for elderly people. A person or couple who are able to take care of their daily needs may choose to live in a retirement apartment complex ("independent living") where they function autonomously. They may choose to fix their own meals or have meals provided, or some combination of both.
Independent senior living differs from continuing care communities, which offer independent living along with multiple other levels of care, such as assisted living and skilled nursing, in one single residence. [2] Independent senior living residents are permitted to use third-party home health care services to meet additional needs.
A group home in a local community is what the government and universities term a "small group home". Group homes always have trained personnel, and administration located both for the home and outside the home at office locations. Larger homes often are termed residential facilities, as are campuses with homes located throughout a campus structure.
ASHA's membership owns and/or manages more than 600,000 units of senior apartments, independent living, assisted living, and continuing care retirement communities. The ASHA sponsors a political action committee named the Seniors Housing PAC. [2] [3] David S. Schless has been the president of the organization since its founding in 1991. [4]
