Ailey joined Horton's dance company in 1953. While there, he took daily technique classes, studied art and music, and taught children's classes. In 1953, he made his debut in Horton's Revue Le Bal Caribe. In a workshop the summer of 1953, Ailey created his first dance composition, Afternoon Blues.
Virginia Tanner [1] began teaching children at the McCune School of Music and Art in Salt Lake City in 1941, where she was director of the dance program.
