The renovated Lodge, managed by Xanterra Parks and Resorts, is an extension of the Mission 66 program, which championed a mid-century modern architectural style adapted to the natural surroundings of Yellowstone National Park. The larger upgrade project will feature new dining halls, bike paths, and sustainability improvements. [5] [6]
The Canyon Hotel was one of four major hotels operated by the Yellowstone Park Company in the early and mid twentieth century in Yellowstone. The company operated a circuit tour of Yellowstone, featuring stops at the Mammoth Hotel, the Old Faithful Inn, the Lake Hotel and the Canyon Hotel, taking about five days for the complete tour. [1]

The valley was the natural route to Yellowstone Lake as trappers, explorers and natives made their way up the Yellowstone River. On August 29, 1870, when Henry D. Washburn and Gustavus Cheyney Doane ascended Mount Washburn during the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition, they saw the great expanse of the Hayden Valley between Yellowstone Falls and the lake.
