Ovilla, on upper Red Oak Creek in northern Ellis County, is the oldest town in the county. It began in 1844 as a fortified settlement known as McNamara's to repel Indian incursions.

It was named for its location near the "grand falls" of the Pecos River, located roughly 3 miles (4.8 km) to the west.
