The base price increased four times during the model year raising the cost of the car by more than $1,200 to $14,345.24. [ 10 ] In 1981, there was only one powerplant available, a 350 cu in (5.7 L) engine that, like the L48 base engine the previous year, produced the 190 hp (142 kW), but was now designated the L81.
The base 350 cu in (5.7 L) two-barrel was rated at 145 hp (108 kW) (standard in 49 states), the 350 CID 4-barrel was rated at 155 hp (116 kW) (available only in California), the 400 CID 4-barrel 175 hp (130 kW), and the 454 CID 4-barrel 215 hp (160 kW) (now equipped with single exhaust with dual exhaust as an option).
