[1] [2] He oversaw the company's growth into an international force from 1914 to 1956. Watson developed IBM's management style and corporate culture from John Henry Patterson's training at NCR. [3]

Watson was born in South Carolina on 8 November 1909. [4] Her father was a carpenter. Watson's family moved to North Philadelphia when she was young. Watson taught at Martha Washington Elementary School in Mill Creek [5] at a time when many Philadelphia teachers were involved in organizing the city's first labor union in the profession – Local 192 of the American Federation of Teachers.
