Boardman Lake is a natural body of water, which would exist even without impoundment by the Union Street Dam, [16] along the course of the river, about a mile upstream from the river's mouth at Grand Traverse Bay. The lake is located within Traverse City and Garfield Township. This lake is also a popular recreational and fishing lake. [17]

Wrecks located in the Grand Traverse Preserve include the schooner Metropolis, which sank off Old Mission Peninsula while carrying a cargo of lumber to Chicago in November 1886. Remains of the wreck were surveyed in 2009. [2] In June 2008, the Grand Traverse Bay Underwater Preserve was listed as Michigan's 12th underwater preserve.
In 1892, an extension of the Chicago and West Michigan Railway from Traverse City to Petoskey was built through Acme. [8] Acme's post office closed on February 15, 1933. The Old Mission Peninsula extends about 17 miles (27 km) from the Lower Peninsula of Michigan into Grand Traverse Bay, itself a bay of Lake Michigan.The peninsula separates Grand Traverse Bay into its West Arm and East Arm. Additionally, the peninsula is adjacent to Bowers Harbor and Old Mission Harbor, smaller inlets of the West Arm and East Arm, respectively.
The Boardman River Nature Center is a nature center in Traverse City, Michigan. It is operated by the Grand Traverse Conservation District, a regional parkland authority. The nature center is dedicated to educating residents of Grand Traverse County about the animals and plants of the area, especially those native to the Boardman River valley. [1]
