The airline began as Boston-Maine Airways, [2] founded as a Pan Am contract carrier on July 20, 1931, by the Boston and Maine Railroad and Maine Central Railroad, flying from Boston to Bangor via Portland. It flew only sporadically until August 11, 1933, when National Airways began to operate its flights under contract.
In the 1950s and 1960s, Bangor was a destination for Northeast Airlines before its merger into Delta. [citation needed] Northeast usually used the Douglas DC-6 for service between Bangor and Boston and New York. The free service shut down after a private company, Flight Line Inc., began operating a paid service along similar routes on July 1, 2008.
