Shang Tsung (Chinese: 尚宗) is a fictional character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game franchise by Midway Games and NetherRealm Studios.He debuted as the antagonist of Mortal Kombat (1992) and has remained one of the franchise's primary characters.
Shang Tsung forms an unlikely alliance with Quan Chi to defeat Kung Lao; they agree that if Shang Tsung can lure Kung Lao into a trap of their creation, Shang Tsung must not only teach Quan Chi how to steal souls, but Quan Chi would own his soul. The Deadly Alliance (Shang Tsung and Quan Chi) were successful in their plan. Raiden's warriors, who were meant to protect the six fictional universes (named "realms"), were killed during their tournament. It served as the perfect distraction to defeat their enemies while they simultaneously claimed enough souls to resurrect the Invincible Army.
It is the fifth main installment in the Mortal Kombat franchise and a sequel to 1997's Mortal Kombat 4. Its story focuses on the eponymous alliance between sorcerers Quan Chi and Shang Tsung and their schemes to revive an ancient army to conquer Outworld and Earthrealm.
The first two episodes are based mostly in a true-to-life universe.
