On June 2, 1967, the road was extended east 1.4 miles (2.3 km) miles to SH 22. On May 29, 2003, by district request, the section from I-35 west to Country Club Road was removed from the highway system and returned to the city of Hillsboro. The remainder of FM 286 was cancelled on December 17, 2009, and returned to the city of Hillsboro.
