Prior to becoming an independent ministry, the ministry was a department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare. The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying was named as the Ministry of Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Dairying at the time of its formation in 2019 but was later renamed to its present name in 2021.
The Animal husbandry infrastructure development fund (AHIDF) is a 15,000 crore fund that was set up in 2020 in order to increase private sector investment in developing animal husbandry infrastructure viz dairy plants, meat processing units and animal feed plants.
