The area is located in the Cumberland Mountains of Southwestern Virginia, about 6 miles southeast of Big Stone Gap, Virginia and 20 miles north of Kingsport, Tennessee. The Mon River Rail Trail North is slated for an extension north from Van Voorhis Road to Pennsylvania, where a trail would loop back to the Cheat Lake Trail. The Mon River Rail Trail North is currently 2 miles (3.2 km) long with an extension to 6 miles (9.7 km) slated for construction. [5]

The 23.8-mile-long North Fork Mountain Trail (NFMT) follows much of the crest of the northern portion of the mountain. [7] The trail's southern terminus is where U.S. Route 33 crosses the ridge and the northern terminus is on Smoke Hole Road, near the top of the canyon. This trail was called the best trail in West Virginia by Outside magazine. [20]
