The Interstate Highways have replaced several portions of the U.S. Highway network in Texas and as a result, they have been removed from the State Highway System. Several examples include US 81 from Fort Worth to Laredo in favor of I-35 , US 75 from Dallas to Galveston in favor of I-45 , and US 80 from Dallas to El Paso in favor of I-10 and I-20 .
The current route of US 80 in Texas is significantly shorter than it was when the highway was first commissioned in 1927. [1] The highway in Texas used to run from the New Mexico state line, near El Paso, to the Louisiana state line, via Pecos, Odessa, Abilene, Weatherford, Fort Worth, Dallas, Longview and Marshall. [9]
The present route was originally part of SH 27. That highway had been proposed as early as 1919 [3] and, after TxDOT's predecessor, the Texas Highway Department, gained authority to maintain state highways in 1924, [4] SH 17 had become part of the state highway system by 1933 and concurrent with US 290.
