The Houston Brewing Company was established in 1997 by Carl Wengel in South Street, Houston in a premises attached to the Fox & Hounds pub and restaurant. In 2011 Houston Peter’s Well won Champion Beer of Britain [ 3 ] and in 2012 the business was sold with the new owners closing the brewery in 2016.
The chain was established in 1979 by David Bruce as Bruce's Brewery, the Firkin Brewery grew as a chain of mostly brewpubs offering cask ale. It was acquired by Midsummer Leisure in 1988, Stakis Leisure in 1990 and then by Allied Domecq in 1991; by 1995 the chain had 44 pubs, 19 of which brewed beer on site. [ 1 ]
The brewery moved to Fore Street, Limehouse in 1823 and into the Barley Mow Brewery in Limehouse in 1889. [2] Taylor Walker became a public company in 1927. In 1930, a reverse takeover by the Cannon Brewery, which owned more than 600 public houses, most in East London, gave the latter a controlling interest.
