This line was not convenient to operate but was taken over by the West Cornwall Railway (WCR) and realigned in 1852, extending it west to Penzance and east to Truro. It moved its Truro terminus to join the new Cornwall Railway (CR) which opened from Plymouth on 4 May 1859. The CR completed its line from Truro to Falmouth on 24 August
The North Cornwall Railway obtained its authorising act of Parliament, the North Cornwall Railway Act 1882 (45 & 46 Vict. c. ccliv) on 18 August, but money was scarce and construction was slow, so it was not until 21 July 1886 that the first section opened, and the line was completed in 1899.

The West Cornwall Railway had been opened as a standard gauge line but there was a legal provision that enabled the Cornwall Railway to demand that they install broad gauge rails. Since this was obviously conducive to more efficient operation, the Cornwall company activated the requirement in 1864.

The Okehampton–Bude line was a railway line built to serve Holsworthy in Devon, and Bude on the Cornish coast near the Devon border in England.
