Paris Commune Square (Vietnamese: Công trường Công xã Paris) is a small square located in District 1, downtown Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.It lies between Lê Duẩn Boulevard and Nguyễn Du Street and surrounds the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon.

Chợ Lớn was incorporated as a city in 1879, 11 kilometers (6.8 mi) from Saigon. By the 1930s, it had expanded to the city limit of Saigon. On April 27, 1931, Chợ Lớn and the neighboring city of Saigon were merged to form a single city called Saigon–Cholon.
Construction started on 12 hectares (30 acres) northeast of Thi Nghe Channel, and the zoo occupied 20 hectares (49 acres) by the end of 1865. On February 17, 1869 the zoo opened to the public, and today the Saigon Zoo is one of the oldest continuously operating zoos in the world. The Saigon Zoo has undergone many changes over the years.

In April 1975, during the invasion of South Vietnam by the Communist North Vietnamese Army and the Viet Cong, Thuc and his family fled from Saigon during the fighting.. He had petitioned the United States Embassy for Political asylum and was allowed to immigrate to the United States because he feared for his life living under the Communist Vietnamese.
In this term, the National Assembly adopted the name "the Socialist Republic of Vietnam" (Cộng hoà xã hội chủ nghĩa Việt Nam) for the re-unified country, merged corresponding organizations between the Government of North Vietnam and South Vietnam, and renamed Saigon as Ho Chi Minh City. It also approved the new Constitution in 1980.
