Le Silence de la mer (French pronunciation: [lə silɑ̃s də la mɛʁ], lit. ' The silence of the sea ' ) is a 1949 French war drama film written and directed by Jean-Pierre Melville , in his directorial debut.
An English-language adaptation called The Silence of the Sea was transmitted by the BBC TV service on 7 June 1946 as part of their first evening's programming following the resumption of TV broadcasting after the end of World War II. A French-language film directed by Jean-Pierre Melville, Le Silence de la mer, was released in 1949.

Le Silence de la mer (lit. 'The silence of the sea') is a 2004 French-Belgian TV drama film directed by Pierre Boutron , based on the 1942 book of the same name by Jean Bruller (published clandestinely under the pen name "Vercors"), and starring Thomas Jouannet , Julie Delarme and Michel Galabru .
The New York Times February 23, 1949 review by “T. M. P.” praised the film, describing the action with relish and concluding: “Down to the Sea in Ships is a good adventure for man and boy, for it makes some points about character building which can do none of us any harm.” [4]
