Schoolcraft County was first created in 1843 from the counties of Chippewa and Michlimackinac (now Mackinac), but was not considered fully organized until 1871 (1871 PA 373). It is named for Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, who served as Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the U.S. Government.
