In 2001 the county opened Jay M. Robinson High School, the first new high school in Cabarrus County in 35 years. However, new schools at all three levels tend to become quickly overcrowded (Robinson High School, built for 1,500 students, opened in the fall of 2005 with nearly 1,800 students enrolled).

In 2017–2018 school year, Kannapolis opened a new part of the middle school. Now the upper building houses 6th grade and the lower building houses 7th and 8th. The elementary schools now house k-5 again. The former intermediate school has been renamed George Washington Carver, and is an Arts magnet elementary school.

The school had 138 students and six teachers. The next year there were 463 students and 13 teachers, and the first 10th grade graduating class had 13 members. In 1934 the school added ten rooms, and in 1952 a cafeteria was added, with students paying 25 cents for lunch. [2] The building which became the middle school was added in 1957. [2]
