John Lewis Schumann [1] AM (born 18 May 1953) [2] is an Australian singer-songwriter and guitarist from Adelaide. [3] He is best known as the lead singer for the folk group Redgum, with their chart-topping hit "I Was Only 19 (A Walk in the Light Green)", a song exploring the psychological and medical side-effects of serving in the Australian forces during the Vietnam War.
The last three tracks were originally included as a bonus 7-inch EP with early copies of the album. They were also placed between "I Was Only 19" and "Fabulon" on cassette and CD versions of the album, and appear thusly on the 2016 double LP reissue.
In October 2005, The Herd performed a cover of Redgum's classic anti-war song "I Was Only 19" on Triple J's ‘Like a Version’ radio program. The song became one of the most heavily requested songs on the station. The Herd's version of "I Was Only 19" was voted in at #18 in the 2005 Triple J Hottest 100 playlist. [3]
However, I don't believe this article should be re-titled "Only Nineteen" as "I was Only Nineteen" is the more commonly used form when this song is played on Australian radio or TV. Redgum's compilation CD Against the Grain lists track 13 as "I Was Only 19 (A Walk In The Light Green)" on the back cover.
