The Geelong Oil Refinery is an oil refinery owned and operated by Viva Energy in Corio near Geelong in the Australian state of Victoria. In 2017, it was Australia's second-largest oil refinery, able to process 7.5 billion litres of crude oil per year. [1] The Geelong refinery was established by Shell Australia in 1954. [2]
Viva Energy was created in August 2014 when Vitol Investment Partnership acquired Shell's downstream business in Australia. [7] Vitol retains 29.9% of VEA shares. [8] Also in August 2014, Viva Energy purchased a 50% shareholding in Liberty Oil. [9] [10] and in February 2019, Viva Energy took full ownership.
Liberty Oil was founded in 1995 by David Goldberger and David Wieland, who had previously founded Solo in 1974, before selling it to Ampol in 1989. Goldberger and Wieland had been subject to a ten year non-compete clause however this was ruled void by the Trade Practices Commission when Ampol merged with Caltex.
